How to Keep Your Kitchen Pest-Free

For many of us, the kitchen is one of the most important rooms in the house. Whether you’re making dinner for the family, fixing a late-night snack, or standing in front of the fridge, trying to decide what to grab, the kitchen is a place that we spend a lot of our time.

Unfortunately, pests feel the same way about it, too.

Because the kitchen is where we prep and store food, it’s a haven for bugs and other critters that would love nothing more than to feast upon everything they could dig into. However, assuming that you’re not inviting them as guests into your home, you want to avoid having pests in your kitchen.

So, with that in mind, here are some ways to keep your kitchen pest-free.

Seal Any Cracks

Pests come from the outside, which is why it’s imperative that you try to seal your kitchen off from the outside world as much as possible. Any crack or opening, whether from a window, doorway, or some other seam along your home, can be more than enough for bugs and critters to gain access.

Using caulk or sealant, you can keep the pests out by sealing these openings. To make it even better, you should spray pest repellent on the exterior (never inside your kitchen) so that they won’t be tempted again.

Utilize Proper Food Storage

As you can imagine, leaving food sitting out uncovered can be a magnet for pests. Many people leave food out for a long time, especially when it comes to things like fruit and dry goods.

Fruit flies can lay hundreds of eggs in a single sitting, which means that you can be looking at a massive problem if you aren’t paying attention. Any old or rotting fruit should be disposed of immediately.

If you have other dry goods that will sit in the pantry or cupboard for a long time, make sure to transfer it to a plastic container. Unfortunately, cardboard can be breached easily by pests (especially rodents), and the glue attracts cockroaches.

Keep Your Kitchen Clean

Whether it’s a spill, leftover food crumbs, or other food particles, your kitchen should be wiped down and cleaned as often as possible. Even a few drops of soda or juice can be enough to attract ants and other bugs, which is why you have to stay vigilant.

Also, water can be a valuable resource for critters. Depending on your environment, a small puddle of water can be as appealing as a puddle of soda. Thus, keeping your kitchen dry should be a top priority.
